Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has announced that ₦50 billion will be released to contractors to ensure they remain on-site during the Christmas season and complete ongoing projects.

Speaking on Monday during the groundbreaking ceremony for the Aviation Village at Victor Attah International Airport, Eno emphasized the importance of maximizing the dry season for project execution, given the state’s challenging weather conditions. He also pledged to establish a project monitoring team to enforce compliance.

“We are releasing ₦50 billion to contractors to ensure they don’t go on Christmas vacation. Only contractors who sign undertakings to stay back and complete their projects will be paid,” the governor declared.

Eno further disclosed that over ₦220 billion has been earmarked for road projects in the 2024 budget as part of efforts to position Akwa Ibom as a major hub for construction and infrastructure.

“By 2025, we aim to consolidate these efforts,” he added.

Reiterating his administration’s commitment to enhancing aviation infrastructure, Eno said:

“We are reaffirming our commitment to making Akwa Ibom the aviation hub of Nigeria.”

He commended RAS Premium Construction Limited for its swift mobilization and site preparation, stating:

“This site was once a bush, but you have transformed it. Your dedication is evident. I encourage you to remain on-site because you met our conditions and won the bid.”

Addressing the removal of the Managing Director of Ibom Power Company, Engr. Meyen Etukudo, Eno announced the establishment of a probe panel to investigate the company’s operations.

“We need to determine why the company is running at a loss and owes its gas supplier. Any government investment that fails to yield profit will lead to the removal of the MD. I don’t care about blackmail. We cannot continue investing public funds in projects that yield no results. That’s not how I was raised,” Eno said.

The Chairman of Ibom Airport Development Company, Dr. Iniobong Essien, praised Governor Eno’s aviation-friendly policies. He described the Aviation Village project as an innovative and transformative initiative for the aviation sector.
