Chelsea officially confirmed the signing of 19-year-old Belgian goalkeeper Mike Penders from KRC Genk earlier today, August 27.
The announcement of Mike Penders’ signing comes as Chelsea prepare for the UEFA Europa Conference League second leg play-off against Servette on Thursday.
However, Penders will remain on loan at Genk for the current season and is expected to join Chelsea next summer.
The West London club paid Genk the sum of €20 million to complete the signing of the Belgium Under-19 goalkeeper.
Meanwhile, Chelsea may consider welcoming back defender Trevoh Chalobah to the squad. However, this can only be done if they are able to transfer Axel Disasi to Newcastle United before the summer transfer window closes.
Reports indicate that Chelsea have been working to finalize transfer deals as the summer window draws to a close.
Chalobah’s exclusion from the pre-season squad and the club’s facilities was part of the club’s efforts to offload him and several other players on or before Friday, August 30.
The Athletic claimed that there is a chance for Chalobah to reintegrate into the Chelsea squad. This possibility mainly depends on Chelsea’s transfer activities, notably the potential sale of Axel Disasi.
Chalobah, a versatile English defender, has faced challenges in securing significant playing time at Chelsea in recent seasons, and that is not expected to improve under new coach, Enzo Maresca.
