The Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) has dismissed six staff members over allegations of certificate forgery, sexual harassment, academic fraud, and other serious offenses.
The announcement was made by the university’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Aloysius-Michaels Okolie, during a press briefing on Wednesday in Agbani, Enugu State.
Professor Okolie revealed that the dismissals were the result of decisions reached during the 179th meeting of the University’s Governing Council, which was chaired by the Pro-Chancellor, Sir Chinyeaka Ohaa. The offenses leading to the dismissals included extortion, result manipulation, holding two full-time jobs simultaneously, involvement in the creation of fake transcripts, and the misappropriation of funds amounting to N98,259,314.65.
The Vice Chancellor emphasized that the Governing Council is deeply concerned about the rising incidence of fraudulent practices among university staff. Consequently, the Council has instructed the university’s management to implement strict measures aimed at curbing these vices.
“Council frowned at the spate of examination malpractices and directed Management to apply appropriate sanctions to concerned students, including their collaborators accordingly,” Professor Okolie stated. He also noted that the Council has urged the Vice Chancellor to expedite the conclusion of disciplinary actions and to adopt a “shame strategy” in addressing such cases.
In addition to addressing these issues, Professor Okolie praised the state Governor, Barr. Peter Mbah, for his support in providing necessary equipment and resources, which facilitated the successful accreditation of the Nursing Sciences and Faculty of Pharmaceutical Science programs. He also acknowledged the Governor’s efforts in funding equipment and resource materials for the upcoming resource verification of three new programs: Public Health, Radiography, and Human Nutrition and Dietetics.
The Vice Chancellor assured that the University Council is committed to implementing the Governor’s innovative goals for the institution, aiming to enhance the overall quality and integrity of education at ESUT.
